What is Rift & Quarter Sawn?
Rift and Quarter Sawn is the superior hardwood floor. Better stability and beautiful surface created as a result of how the lumber is sawn at the saw mill.
What is the difference between Quarter Sawn and Rift Sawn?
Quarter Sawn – annual rings are at 90° angle to the surface of the board
Has the flecks or tiger stripe characteristics on the face from the medullary rays
Rift Sawn – annual rings are closer to 45° angle to the surface of the board
Very straight & tight grain, clean look. Rift only floors are often used in museums or for basket weave and herringbone design.
Can you mix wood species and designs in a house?
There are no rules with your hardwood floor design! For example: adding a cherry border to a hickory floor doesn’t really increase the overall cost of the floor, but will create a very personal and one of a kind look for your home!
Will my floors cup and gap?
One of the benefits of buying Rift and Quarter Sawn or Allegheny Live Sawn flooring is in the stability of each board. The direction of the annual rings in each board determines the natural contraction and expansion of the wood. Plain Sawn floors will have movement across the width and may cup and gap. Rift, Quarter, and Live Sawn will not. The way the lumber is dried at the saw mill is a huge factor in the stability of your floor as well. At Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring we receive all of our lumber from our parent company, Hickman Lumber, and we have total quality control throughout the entire process. We are confident that we dry our lumber better than anyone else in the country and that is why we will only use our own! After the floor leaves our plant the installer has the responsibility in maintaining the moisture content of the floor before and during installation, if not, this could create problems in the flooring.
Can floors be installed on concrete?
Recently development in glue and installation process have some installers confident in laying solid ¾” hardwood floor below grade on cement as long as it has been dried sufficiently and there is no history of water leakage. We can offer a quality engineered floor that we typically will recommend for basements and concrete installation.
Can hardwood floors be installed over radiant heat?
Allegheny Mountain Hardwood flooring’s Rift & Quarter sawn and Allegheny Live Sawn are excellent for installing over radiant heat. Our confidence in our lumber drying abilities and stability due to how the lumber is sawn makes for a very stable hardwood floor in your home.
